YouTube Live now streaming select partners in real time

Not content with limiting its dominance in streaming uploaded videos, YouTube is now ready to take on competitors like Justin.TV and Ustream. The new YouTube Live service is being rolled out to select YouTube partners and will enable real-time broadcasting. In its official announcement, Google states that "The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead."

You can check out live broadcasts at http://www.youtube.com/live, where you'll also find a schedule of upcoming episodes from beta partners like Revision3 and Destructoid. You're also able to subscribe to YouTube Live broadcasts -- which will ensure you're notified when a new episode is coming up.

Ask Engadget: best quick-shutter camera for under $700?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Travis, who is soon to become a father (congratulations!) and wants to capture the baby's life with a new camera. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"I'm about to become a new parent and my not-so-tech-savvy wife thinks we need a ridiculous DSLR to get good, quick pics of our new child. I argue there are plenty of cameras out there with fast shutter speeds that won't cost us too much, but I don't know what exactly to look for. I want to take quick pictures to capture those really cute shots that other cameras miss. What's a good camera that I can get less for $700?"
Camera experts, baby owners, people who balance objects on your pets, what's the camera you can rely on to catch those split-second moments of cuteness? Our thoughts lead us toward the Nikon J1's motion snapshot, or the Sony NEX-C3, but perhaps someone out there knows the perfect baby-snapping camera? Dear friends, the floor -- by which we mean the comments feed below -- is yours.

GoDaddy Responds To Namecheap Accusations, Removes ?Normal? Rate Limiting Block

Screen Shot 2011-12-26 at 1.57.57 PMYou know who got a lump of coal in their PR stocking this year? Domain registrar GoDaddy. Its most recent stumble? The company's presence on a SOPA supporter list sparked an impromptu user exodus last week, with already tens of thousands of domains being transferred in the fall out. Sensing a communications disaster (GoDaddy has gotten really good at this) the new CEO Warren Adelman then reversed the companies official position on SOPA, well kind of.

NORAD tracks Santa and you can, too, with the official app

Track Santa

Norad tracking Santa started back in 1955, pretty much by accident when a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement accidentally printed the number to the Continental Air Defense Command center as the number to call in order to get in touch with Santa. Ever since then the Continental Air Defense Command center now known as NORAD has been tracking Santa every Christmas creating a tradition for many folks.

This year, a new Santa tracking app has been released and is now ready for download. With it, you can track Santa's progress as he travels across the world delivering presents to good boys and girls.

Plus, you can play the included Elf Toss game that is actually quite fun. You have to help the Elf's toss presents to Santa all while avoiding the holes in the ice -- otherwise, you may lose some presents and they won't make their way. Just remember -- Santa hasn't left the North Pole yet but when he does, this app will let you know. Download is past the break for you all.

And on Christmas Eve, you also can search for "Santa" in Google Maps and track that way.

People Spend Twice As Much Time On Netflix Than On Hulu

Netflix time spentNetflix and Hulu are the two leading video streaming services on the Web when it comes to mainstream TV shows and movies. More people watch Netflix online than Hulu, and have since about 18 months ago. In November, 2011, comScore estimates that Netflix.com attracted 26.6 million unique visitors, versus 20.2 million for Hulu But a better metric to compare the two is how much time people actually spend at each site. And there Netflix trounces Hulu by two to one. U.S. visitors spent 1 billion minutes on Netflix.com in November, 2011, versus 480 million minutes on Hulu, according to comScore. (One caveat here is that people also go to Netflix.com to manage their DVD accounts and browse movie titles in addition to streaming videos, but the growth in time spent is most likely coming from streaming). Netflix has an edge over Hulu in that it streams more movies than TV shows, and those tend to be longer. But if that was the only factor, you'd expect to see the same ratio over time. Yet back in November, 2010, the two services were almost neck-and-neck in time spent, with Netflix users logging 750 million total minutes versus Hulu users logging 690 million.

Stranger Danger

My sister recently had a talk with my four-year-old nephew Jack about strangers. Here's how it went:

SISTER: Now, Jack, if a stranger says, "Come here, I want to show you something," what do you do?

JACK: I turn around and run!

SISTER: If a stranger says, "Come here, I want to give you some candy," what do you do?

JACK: I turn around and run!

SISTER: If a stranger says, "Come here, I want to show you my puppy," what do you do?

JACK: Oh, I love puppies...
