New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

CyanogenMod hits 1 million unique installs

Android Central

Last night Steve Kondik (Cyanogen) and Jef Oliver from the CyanogenMod team broke the news that the popular custom firmware has reached 1 million unique installs. CM, which is by far the leading multi-device custom ROM for Android phones, is officially supported on 56 Android devices, with many more available via unofficial or nightly builds.

Interestingly, almost half of the CM installations are of unofficial or "KANGed" builds, although that's likely skewed by official-unofficial self-KANG builds by developers maintaining not-yet-supported phones like the HTC Sensation and EVO 3D. Top devices include the HTC Desire and Motorola DEFY, with over 80,000 and 58,000 installs respectively.

Congrats to the CM team in reaching this huge milestone. With more than a few Android owners eagerly awaiting the ICS-based CM9 in the months ahead, that number is sure to increase in 2012.

'Dark Knight Rises' Screenwriter Defends Bane's Voice

Jonathan Nolan promises Tom Hardy is 'spectacular' in the wake of controversy over villain's muffled vocals in 'DKR' prologue.

Fans and critics may have had a difficult time understanding Bane's dialogue in "The Dark Knight Rises" prologue, but they'll have no problem comprehending what screenwriter Jonathan Nolan has to say about the matter.

In an interview at a Television Critics Association event in Los Angeles, director Christopher Nolan's brother was asked about the reaction some folks had to Bane's muffled lines. And while he admitted he'd rather discuss his CBS drama "Person of Interest," he didn't exactly duck the question, either.

"I've gotta tell you, I think what Tom Hardy is doing with the role is spectacular," Nolan said. "I've had the benefit of seeing a little bit more than the audience has seen, at this point, and it's pretty spectacular."

The writer doled out praise for Hardy — who plays the veiny, verbose villain in the upcoming film — and assured fans that, really, the prologue shows just one small part of a very multifaceted character. Nolan was rather tight-lipped about additional "Dark Knight" details, saying only, "We're still in lock-down mode, in terms of talking about that project." Though he did speak about the inspiration behind the eye-popping, mid-air snatch-and-grab that's prominently featured in the prologue.

"It's an amazing team with my brother [Christopher Nolan], [producer] David Goyer and myself. Those are two great guys to work with and brainstorm with," Nolan said. "I think Chris [has] long wanted to do the aerial spectacular. It's such a good fit for the IMAX cameras that he likes to shoot with, and so that was a long time in the making."

What do you think of Bane's voice in the prologue? Sound off!

Android 4.0.2 for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus rolling out again

Android Central  Android Central

Mmmm. Can you taste that (almost) fresh new version of Ice Cream Sandwich? It appears as though Android 4.0.2 is rolling out to the GSM versions of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus again via an OTA update, so if you were one of the unlucky ones who have yet to receive it now may be your time. Weighing in at only 8.8MB it is pretty obvious that this is just a few bug fixes, but hey who doesn't enjoy a nice update for their device. If you haven't been notified of the update be sure to head into your settings and check manually for the update. Be sure to hop in the forums and let us know how it works out for you, and what you changes you notice.

A big thanks from Phil goes out to Seth Weintraub!

Lenovo announces brainier Classmate PC, heads to top of the class

Kids have been honing their computer smarts on Intel-based Classmate PCs for a few years now, and Lenovo's just sewn its name inside the collar of its second generation of student-friendly lappies. Based on the chip maker's "Learning Series," Lenovo's new boy comes in clamshell and convertible flavors, and brings an Atom N2600 processor, a max of 2GB DDR3 memory and up to a 320GB -- or 32GB solid state -- storage along to class. It'll launch in uniform grey (like the first generation pictured), but orders that meet the minimum requirement can choose to splash a little color on top. As before, these things are designed to handle the daily rigors dished out by a nine-year-old, hence a new rotating hinge on the convertible, strengthened and designed to last "tens of thousands of cycles." Should be enough to see you into adulthood then. It's available to institutions as of this month, but if you want to know more, hit the PR after the break.
