New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Idris Elba might have been celebrating at the 2012 Golden Globes for his "Luther" win, but he has a number of high-profile projects coming up also worth cheering over. MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with the British actor to get an update on Elba's role in several of 2013's biggest movies.

Next year, Elba will star in Guillermo del Toro's big, ambitious, monster versus robot movie "Pacific Rim." The actor has been in Toronto filming del Toro's first film since 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," and he said he can't wait to get back.

"I'm going back tomorrow morning. I've been there for five months," Elba said. "I love it. Guillermo's a genius, and the film we're making is a huge film, bad monster movie and robots and me."

If starring in del Toro's next film wasn't enough, Elba also has his own spot in the Marvel universe to worry about. The actor confirmed that his character, Heimdall, would be making another appearance soon. " 'Thor 2' for sure," Elba said. " 'Avengers,' we're not sure about, but 'Thor 2' we're going at it again."

Elba won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for "Luther," a BBC series about a troubled detective. He shared his excitement about winning for a smaller show. "This is great. We made our little show in London, and now we're getting this worldwide recognition of it," Elba said. "Love it."

Check out the 2012 Golden Globes winners, and don't miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet!

O'Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O'reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one "Deal of the Day", which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they've created a discount code -- DDJPN -- that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they've raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you've been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

<P>Anything can happen on the red carpet at any given awards show, and in 2011, it felt like anything that could happen <i>did</i>. As MTV News reflects on some of the biggest moments of the year, we decided to remember some of the most-memorable things A-listers did live right in front of us all. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1676574" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Lady Gaga's Egg<br> In February, Gaga had everyone guessing how she would arrive to the Grammys. Given her penchant for crazy looks, no one would have guessed she would have showed up in an egg. Designed by Hussein Chalayan, Gaga later emerged from the structure to proclaim that she was "Born This Way." What was your favorite red-carpet moment of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll! Snooki<br> Speaking of the Grammys, the reality star joined MTV News' own Sway Calloway to talk to all the stars at the show. After helping us out on the 2010 red carpet, we learned that anything is possible with Snooki, and 2011 solidified that she's the fieriest "meatball" to grace the "Jersey Shore." We wonder if she and Bruno Mars ever ended up dating. <b>Paul McDonald and Nikki Reed</b><br> "Twilight" star Nikki Reed surprised everyone when she hit up the MTV Movie Awards in June. No, she hadn't borrowed Gaga's egg: She was rocking an engagement rock from her beau and "American Idol" alum Paul McDonald. The couple used the red carpet as the platform to announce their engagement, and married in October. Beyoncé's Baby Bump<br> She might have rubbed that burgeoning baby bump onstage at the Video Music Awards in August, but hours before she took the stage, donning a bright orange gown, Beyoncé let the paparazzi know she was expecting her first child with hubby Jay-Z by flaunting her pregnancy glow. Justin Bieber's Snake<br> While Beyonc&#233; shared with the world her baby news, Bieber not only planted a kiss on VMA pre-show host and real-life lady love Selena Gomez, but also introduced her to his pet snake. His name? Johnson. She seemed less interested in the snake than perhaps he would have liked. <i>What was your favorite red-carpet moment in 2011? Share your pick below!</i></p>

Jessica Alba Drops By ?FOX & Friends?

Taking care of a media appearance, Jessica Alba was spotted at FOX Studios in New York City this morning (January 18).

The ?Fantastic Four? starlet looked snazzy in a long black wool coat and bright pink high heels as she stepped out onto the Manhattan street.

Jessica recently explained her motivation to begin her new e-commerce company Honest.com, which sells Eco-friendly and toxic-free baby products and household items.

"I would buy what I thought was like an eco-brand and pay out the wazoo for it and then find out that it's made with the same ingredients as any other brand, but the packaging is a little more biodegradable and you're like `But I care about the product touching my kid. Is that OK?'"

"I came up with the idea. I had to pitch it to my partners and they came on board and together we created the company from scratch. From the packaging to the bottles to the product that's inside, the way that the interfacing is with the website, all of that is really from me ... it's taken three years to get here."

Alienware announces X51 small form factor gaming PC, starting at $699

Alienware may have just upgraded its Aurora gaming rig, but that's not to keep the company from giving more diminutive form factors some love. Just this evening, the subsidiary of Dell announced the X51, a slim gaming PC that's designed to orient itself either vertically or horizontally on the desktop -- complete with an Alienware logo that properly rotates depending on positioning. The system includes both Core i3 and i5 options, and features a slot-loading optical drive with an option for Blu-ray. While it's no shocker, the X51 can be upgraded to 8GB of RAM and a full 1TB of storage. Further, the case accommodates a single, full size NVIDIA GeForce GT 545 graphics card, (with the GTX 555 available as an upgrade), and features an external power supply that's available in 240W or 330W versions. Users can also expect HDMI 1.4, on-board WiFi, USB 3.0 and digital 7.1 surround sound. As a nifty trick, the computer's accent colors can be conveniently modified with the Alienware Command Center software. Touting immediate availability, customers can place orders for the X51 right away, with configurations starting as low as $699. For the complete set of specs that make up this Mini-ITX gamer, just follow the break.
