Tarzan Ball is a tricky hook-and-pull physics game

tarzanball
So, you're a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You've earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy 'vine' (I hope it's a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That's a handy ability to have, especially since you've got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don't just swing around the screen aimlessly - that wouldn't be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect "targets". Each level has one of these "targets" hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That's when you pass the level.

You can't die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It's actually one of the tougher games I've posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

Acrobatic quadrocopters hunt in packs, seduce you into submission (video)

We've kept a pretty stern eye on the development of GRASP Lab's quadrocopters, and with good reason it seems, now that the four-bladed aerial ninjas have even more alarming abilities at their disposal. In the video after the break, watch them hold a variety of complex formations like it's no thing -- even while on the move. The 'copters can also take flight, or resume position, after being thrown into the air, navigating real world obstacles with deft fluidity. It's part of Pennsylvania University's Scalable sWarms of Autonomous Robots and Mobile Sensors project (conveniently SWARMS for short), which is responsible for developing the air-born acrobats' new grouping skills. They say it's an attempt to replicate swarming habits in nature, though we're not convinced.

Amazon announces Q4 2011 earnings; all Kindle sales up 177 percent

But still no hard numbers given on Kindle Fire sales

Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon today released its fourth-quarter 2011 earnings numbers. Net revenue was up 41 percent year over year to $48.08 billion, but net income fell 45 percent to $631 million.

Amazon's already said that the Android-based Kindle Fire is its "best selling," "most wished for" and "most gifted device" of the 2011 holiday season, but until today it had yet to give any actual numbers. That trend continued today, though Amazon did announce that sales of all its Kindle products -- including the tablet and e-readers -- were up 177 percent over Q4 2010. Of course, the Kindle Fire didn't exist then, so large growth wouldn't be unexpected.

The Amazon Appstore did well for itself in the three months ending Dec. 31, 2011, however. Amazon says Appstore customers nearly tripled for the quarter, and than more apps were downloaded in those three months than in all previous quarters combined. The Appstore launched in March  2011.

A conference call is coming up -- we'll listen in for anything worthwile. Full presser's after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance coming to Three UK

Android Central

Yesterday Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy S Advance, a new mid-range device that fits somewhere between the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II in terms of hardware muscle. Now British network Three is the first to confirm that it'll be carrying the phone, though no firm release date is on offer just yet. For its part, Samsung has indicated that the Galaxy S Advance will be coming to Russia in February, with Europe and other territories following later in the year.

Head on over to yesterday's announcement post for more Galaxy S Advance details. Three has also published a sneak peek video of the Galaxy S Advance, which you'll find embedded after the break.
