IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

'Spider-Man' Star Andrew Garfield Reveals Spidey 'Shrine'

'I did try to look at every single thing that exists,' he tells MTV News of his research for the role.

Most Spider-Man fans would agree that the man who plays the iconic hero should be a fan. In that respect, Andrew Garfield fits the bill perfectly.

When Garfield spoke with MTV News' Josh Horowitz before a screening event for fans, he explained his process of tackling the role for "The Amazing Spider-Man," and it involved lots and lots of comic books. "I did try to look at every single thing that exists. That is impossible, I discovered, but I did my best," he said.

But naturally, as a fan, there would be certain incarnations of the web-slinger that resonated with Garfield and helped him conceive his take on Spider-Man. For Garfield, those insights came from many different comic book sources. "There were certain things that I loved for his physicality. There were certain things that I loved for his wit. There were certain incarnations that I loved for his body type," Garfield said. "The Ultimates, I love the body type in the Ultimates and his physicality in the Ultimates, but I also love the artwork in the 'Torment' series, the [Todd] McFarlane series."

Once those pieces were found, it was a matter of stringing them all together into an in-depth conception of the superhero. Garfield and his stunt team attempted to go through every level of Peter Parker's life and think of the implications of his powers.

"Me and the stunt boys, we created a room where we just had a shrine to everything Spidey and to everything Peter Parker, because we wanted to make sure the physical language wasn't just a guy in a suit being a guy in a suit and throwing punches and throwing kicks," he said. "We didn't want it to be Jason Statham in a suit. We wanted it to be a half-spider, half-boy, who has spider DNA running around his blood system."

To realistically pull this off, the team went step-by-step to imagine how Spider-Man would realistically act, something necessary for bringing him to the big screen. "We wanted to understand deeply what that meant in terms of how he moves, in terms of skin sensitivity, in terms of his abilities of awareness. Imagine if he had six eyes. Imagine if he had more legs and what that means, not just within the suit but in day-to-day life," Garfield said. "He can eat Chinese takeout with his feet, while he's also writing a note, while texting with his shoulder. What does that mean? We tried to approach it from as organic a place as possible."

Check out everything we've got on "The Amazing Spider-Man."

HTC's first ICS update rolls out in late March, Sensation and Sensation XE call first dibs

HTC's first ICS update rolls out in late March, Sensation and Sensation XE call first dibs
Ice Cream Sandwich is slowly trickling out to the masses, but we're still waiting on the major phone vendors to come out with their own tweaks of the latest Android dessert. We've known that HTC's busy plugging away at its Sense-ified version of Android 4.0, but the company's finally ready to start discussing specifics. According to the outfit's UK Facebook page, the update will begin rolling out to the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE by the end of March, with the Sensation XL following suit. Additionally, owners of the EVO 3D, Incredible S, Desire S and Desire HD still haven't been forgotten, but their long-awaited upgrades to Ice Cream Sandwich will come sometime "later this year." That sure narrows down the timeframe. Hopefully we won't have to wait until the end of March to officially cast our eyes on the new Sense, as we're keeping our fingers crossed that we'll see some ICS love in new devices at Mobile World Congress later this month.

Update: HTC's US Facebook page also announced the update, and added the Rezound, Vivid, Amaze 4G and EVO Design 4G to the list of devices that should receive ICS later this year.

[Thanks, Willy]

Jay-Z And Kanye's 'N---as In Paris' Rooted In 'Real Life'

'That record is a process of what was happening in Paris at that time,' Watch the Throne A&R Bu Thiam tells MTV News.

The best rap records are usually rooted in reality, but fans have come to expect their favorite MCs to use a bit of poetic license when delivering their rhymes. That's not the case with Kanye West and Jay-Z, though: According to Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam, the lyrics on the Throne's "N---as in Paris" — the video for which was released Thursday (February 9) — are as real as they come.

"What I realized in this process is that them dudes really rap about what they go through," Thiam told MTV News back in August after Watch the Throne was released. "I've A&R'd other albums, and people, sometimes they rap about somebody else's story or what they think is a story. But those guys, everything they rap about is what they're actually going through."

Take "N---as in Paris," for instance, which has music fans across the world shouting, "That sh-- cray."

On the song's hook Hov raps, "Ball so hard mother----ers wanna fine me," and while it sounds like an empty MC boast, the popular lyric is rooted in truth. Hov, who is a minority owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets, was caught taking pictures with the University of Kentucky's men's basketball team during their NCAA tournament run last year. It all seemed like a harmless gesture, but contact between NBA personnel and potential NBA college prospects is prohibited. In April, the Nets were fined $50,000 for Hov's actions.

"When you hear it, you're thinking it's bragging, but no, it's really true," Thiam said of the Throne's lyrics. "It's crazy how they take the words and they make the songs and make it reality, and you're thinking it's just verses, but nah, it's really reality for them dudes."

Beyond b-ball drama, the accomplished A&R who also helped string together Rihanna's Talk That Talk said the entire "N---as in Paris" record is just a reflection of Jay and Kanye's wild outing to France. "Going out, kicking it and just having fun. That record is a process of what was happening in Paris at that time," he said. "It's real life, I promise you, it is."

What's your favorite lyric from the Throne's "N---as in Paris"? Tell us in the comments!
