Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

FCC seeks to streamline licensing requirements for 800MHz band

FCC seeks to streamline licensing requirements for 800MHz band
A new proposal set forth by the FCC would modify the Commission's licensing requirements of the 800MHz band by replacing its current site-based model with more contemporary geographic guidelines. Commissioners argue the change is needed, as site-based rules were originally established to consider the propagation of analog signals -- now obsolete by anyone's standards. The move would bring the licensing requirements of the 800MHz spectrum to parity with the 700MHz, AWS and PCS bands and reduce a boatload of paperwork along the way by eliminating current data collection requirements. The proposal would also create a new, two-stage auction process for the unlicensed areas, based on the new geographic approach. The FCC is now seeking public comment, and its PR can be found after the break.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

'Vow' Lands 2012's Biggest Box Office Opener Yet

Romance starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams debuts with estimated $41.7 million, followed by 'Safe House' and 'Journey 2.'

Moviegoers are clearly feeling romantic in 2012. Bittersweet drama "The Vow" was #1 at the box office over the weekend, with the biggest opening for any movie so far this year. Co-starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, "The Vow" debuted to the tune of an estimated $41.7 million while three other movies opened to more than $20 million each during the weekend before Valentine's Day.

Denzel Washington's "Safe House" was #2 with a $39 million debut. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," which had already performed well overseas, opened at #3 with $27.5 million. The 3-D re-release of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" earned $23 million. Last weekend's #1 film, the found-footage flick "Chronicle," rounded out the top five with another $12.3 million for a $40.1 million total.

Overall box-office receipts were up a whopping 30 percent compared to the same period one year ago.

"The Vow" wasn't written by Nicholas Sparks, but its emotional subject matter is comparable with the Sparks dramas in which each of its stars have previously participated: Tatum with 2010's "Dear John" and, of course, McAdams in the mega-popular "The Notebook." "Safe House" came in behind only "American Gangster" in regard to opening-weekend numbers for Denzel. For "Journey 2," which performed better than industry projections, 3-D ticket sales accounted for roughly 74 percent of business.

"The Phantom Menace" jumped from seventh to fifth place on the all-time box-office scorecard thanks to the additional boost over the weekend. The first of the "Star Wars" prequels — and the worst-reviewed film in George Lucas' iconic franchise — has now made $454.1 million in the U.S.

This weekend's new releases include the comic-book sequel "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," featuring Nicolas Cage returning to the title role; "This Means War," an action-comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy ("Inception") and Chris Pine ("Star Trek"); and "The Secret World of Arrietty," a Japanese animated movie with new recordings of American actors voicing the characters.

Check out everything we've got on "The Vow."

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0N starts shipping in Germany

Galaxy Tab 7.0N
Just like the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, the 7.0N addresses the legal "issues" surrounding Samsung's slates. The tiny tablet was unveiled last month and now it's starting to hit shelves in Germany with its lawsuit-circumventing redesign in place. It's a little later than anticipated, but our friends in Deutschland can now pick up the tweaked Tabs starting at €499 for a 16GB WiFi version, while an HSPA+ model will set TouchWiz fans back €569.
