Amazing Spider-Man Makes His Mark In New York

MTV News joins Spidey supporters to spread the friendly neighborhood web-slinger's insignia all across Manhattan.

NEW YORK — Spider-Man needs support. Sure, he's better off than most: Spinning webs and climbing walls does have its perks. But a strong superhero is nothing without a strong base of supporters championing his every move — something that isn't exactly easy for Spidey to accomplish with the Daily Bugle painting him as a menace on every other front page.

Perhaps MTV News can show the hero in a different light. Last Friday, we were invited to join a small group of passionate supporters to spread the mark of Spider-Man all across New York City. Our mission: to travel to predetermined locations throughout Manhattan to tag specific walls with the Amazing Spider-Man's famous insignia. "That's kind of odd," you might be saying to yourself. But there was nothing odd about it to Abigail Flynn, one of the carefully selected Spidey supporters out in full force on behalf of the amazing web-slinger.

"We're supporting Spider-Man," Flynn told MTV News of the campaign. "We're putting up the mark of the Spider-Man around the city to spread awareness and spread his message."

Fellow web-head Walter Sojda added, "He's fighting for the little guy. We have to show that in New York, we care about Spider-Man. We're supporting him here."

New York isn't the only place Spider-Man has recently found support. All last week, the superhero's message was spread throughout five other American cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Atlanta. Clearly, the hero's national awareness is on the rise — good timing, no doubt, considering he has a movie on the way!

Spreading the mark of Spider-Man isn't the only thing that has our spider senses tingling here at MTV News. Early last week, MTV Splash Page received a mysterious backpack in the mail, with no explanation as to its origin other than a haphazardly attached piece of duct tape reading "Property of Peter Parker." Spidey's supporters were tight-lipped when asked about Parker's identity, so the connection between the two remains unclear for now.

Here's something that is clear: Despite what the Bugle says, there's a whole lot of love out there for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man — and Manhattan has the mark to prove it.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Justin Bieber spent the day before Valentine's Day with a special girl. No, he wasn't with his lady love, Selena Gomez — instead he visited Monday with a 6-year-old Belieber, Avalanna Routh, who is suffering from an aggressive form of cancer. In a photo posted to his Twitter account, Bieber is seen hanging out with the young fan, dubbed "Mrs. Bieber." And the experience seems to have really affected him. "Hangin out with a special little girl. #MrsBieber," he tweeted about the meeting. "That was one of the best things i have ever done. She was AWESOME! Feeling really inspired now! #MrsBieber." Avalanna's dream came true after her family started a Facebook campaign for her to meet Bieber, which, along with her pretend marriage to the teen superstar, was reported by a Boston-area news outlet. When the always-charitable Bieber caught wind of the marriage and her family's efforts, the "Today" show reports, he flew Avalanna and her family to New York. The 6-year-old, whose "marriage" to Bieber was orchestrated by the charity the Jimmy Fund, has had an incredibly rare form of cancer called AT/RT since she was a baby.

"Got some really great ideas from today. ways to #giveback. #MrsBieber really inspired me. Really," he said, adding, "BEST PART OF MY DAY." Bieber is involved with several charities through his Believe charity drive, including Pencils of Promise, the organization started by Adam Braun, brother of his manager Scooter, that builds schools for children around the world. The pop star also made headlines recently when he tweeted about a fan who needed an organ donation, skyrocketing registrations at the Trillium Gift of Life Network donor bank in Ontario, Canada.

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Samsung's iCloud rival delayed after in-house service deemed 'unsuitable'

Korean newspaper ETNews is developing a reputation for bold claims, the latest being that Samsung's "answer" to iCloud, S-Cloud has been significantly delayed. SDS, the conglomerate's IT infrastructure division had originally been tasked to build the network, but its work was found to be "unsuitable." After the setback, Samsung's Media Solution Center had to enlist KT, operators of public cloud services in Korea and Amazon to help move things forward. An unnamed "cloud industry" source who spoke to the daily pointed out that one of the burdens of releasing so many (oh so many) devices is that the company has to work a lot harder to ensure all of them are compatible with any unified cloud service -- but them's the breaks, eh?

Cows Can Now Booty Call Their Farmers [Science]

Farming cows is a thankless task; keeping track of their fertility sounds funny, but it's what keeps meat in your burger and milk on your cereal. Fortunately, mobile technology means that cows can now drop their farmers an SMS when they're feeling frisky. That's right. Bovine sexting has arrived. More »
