Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

LandAirSea SilverCloud Real-Time GPS Tracking System Review

I’ve been playing with several different kinds of GPS tracking devices for a while, including the nu.m8 GPS Child Locator Watch. The nu.m8 GPS tracking system used a GPS receiver to determine location, and would “report” it’s location when “pinged” via SMS or computer to give the latest position.  So for the most part, it [...]

'American Idol' Reveals Season 11 Top 24

But in a twist, it's announced that one of four eliminated contestants will be welcomed back next week for the first Top 25.

"American Idol" revealed its final 10 semifinalists Thursday (February 23), rounding out the Top 24 that will compete for America's votes during season 11's live episodes, which begin next week.

The remaining 10 contestants were chosen from the pool of 42 sent to Las Vegas to compete for the chance to perform on the live shows. The first 14, including Heejun Han (Heejun Han!), were unveiled during Wednesday's episode.

Thursday's show picked up with the cliffhanger from Wednesday, regarding the fate of 27-year-old Adam Brock. The teary-eyed Brock made it, of course; "American Idol" can be cruel (see last week's brutal "Gotcha!" twist), but it's not cruel enough to let a contestant hang in the balance for a full day and then not let him through. Especially one with a cute little girl at home.

The toughest cut Thursday was the one dealt to Jermaine Jones, the 25-year-old baritone-voiced "gentle giant" who took the news very hard, nearly collapsing in tears. Most shocking was the elimination of David Leathers Jr., the would-be heartthrob nicknamed "Mr. Steal Your Girl" who was thought early on to be one of the contestants to beat, despite the fact that the bow-tied 17-year-old looked like he was 12.

But in a shocking final twist — "GOTCHA!" — it was revealed at the end of the episode that either Leathers, Jones, Richie Law or Johnny Keyser will return next week to join the show, making it a Top 25. Isn't "Idol" fun?

Here is the full list of the season's Top 24 contestants:

» Adam Brock, 27, Washington, Pennsylvania
» Jeremy Rosado, 19, Valrico, Florida
» Eben Franckewitz, 15, Loveland, Ohio
» Shannon Magrane, 16, Tampa, Florida
» Hallie Day, 24, Baltimore, Maryland
» Chase Likens, Point Pleasant, New Jersey
» Aaron Marcellus, 27, Atlanta
» DeAndre Brackensick, 17, San Jose, California
» Skylar Laine, 18, Brandon, Mississippi
» Hollie Cavanagh, 18, McKinney, Texas
» Heejun Han, 22, Flushing, New York
» Phillip Phillips, 21, Leesburg, Georgia
» Creighton Fraker, 28, Queens, New York
» Jen Hirsh, 25, Agoura Hills, California
» Chelsea Sorrell, 23, Stokesdale, Arizona
» Elise Testone, 28, Charleston, South Carolina
» Reed Grimm, 26, Ellsworth, Wisconsin
» Joshua Ledet, 19, Westlake, Louisiana
» Erika Van Pelt, 26, South Kingstown, Rhode Island
» Baylie Brown, 22, Krum, Texas
» Jessica Sanchez, 16, San Diego
» Colton Dixon, 20, Murfreesboro, Tennessee
» Haley Johnsen, 23, Beaverton, Oregon
» Brielle Von Hugel, 17, Staten Island, New York

Next week, the men compete during Tuesday's two-hour episode and the women square off on Wednesday's two-hour showdown, and the first finalists will be revealed on Thursday's two-hour live results show.

Firefox 4 Friday: 25 million downloads, anti-aliasing, and how to make it look like Firefox 3

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days
If you've had your head under a rock for the last few days, here's this week's Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you're wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany's Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you've installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it's time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome -- including the color of that orange button!

Don't Worry, Men: The Y Chromosome Isn't Dying Out [Science]

For a long time, biologists have predicted that the Y chromosome—the DNA that makes men men—was gradually dying out, and that it would eventually lead to the extiniction of the male of the species. Fortunately, a team of researchers has proven that isn't the case. More »
