UK teen arrested for illegal BBM, social media crackdown gains steam

Lending further gravity to the proposed crackdown being bandied about in British parliament, an Essex teen has been arrested for sending a BBM that ran afoul of the Serious Crime Act of 2007. The 18-year old, now free on bail, allegedly used the service to encourage copycat attacks of the violent rioting that's swept London, and is set to appear in court on September 1st. It's the second known case to put RIM's private messaging service -- "popular among urban teenagers" as a cheap texting alternative -- in the UK's legal hotseat. For its part, the Canadian electronics maker has since reached out to police, promising to aid the investigation "in any way [it] can." Although no decision has yet been made to extend law enforcement's powers over social media services, such as Twitter and Facebook, arrests like these seem to indicate a murky free speech future.

After news broke on Thursday that Miranda Cosgrove had been injured in a tour bus accident, new details are emerging about what is being described as a potentially "life-threatening" accident.

The "iCarly" star and her fellow passengers, including her mother, were shaken up by the crash, according to multiple reports. On Friday (August 12), Cosgrove, who had yet to comment publicly on the accident, took to Twitter to let her fans know she's doing fine and appreciates all of their support."Thank u so much for all your messages," the teen star tweeted. "They mean so much to me. Yesterday was extremely scary & I'm just so happy everyone's gonna be okay."

TMZ reported that it was dark out when Cosgrove's bus came across a semi-truck, en route to Kansas, the next stop on her Dancing Crazy Tour. The singer/actress' bus driver decided that instead of trying to swerve out of the way of the truck, he would hit the brakes and face the vehicle head on. He was the most seriously injured of the group, and was airlifted to a local hospital, where he received as many as 45 stitches. He is currently in stable condition, according to sources.

Photos from the crash show extensive damage to front of the bus and the semi-truck appeared to have overturned onto the side of the road.

"Miranda's mom was on the bus with her and got really beaten up by the crash," a source told People. "She's expected to fully recover, but it's scary because the driver was hurt, too, and he's in really bad shape."

The source added that the teen star was "really shaken up" by the crash. "A piece from the tractor-trailer went straight through the windshield and the driver's arm was sliced all the way through," according to the magazine's source.

Cosgrove had been sleeping on a couch at the front of the bus when the accident occurred. Those sleeping in the bunks farther back were not injured.

Leave your well-wishes for Miranda Cosgrove in the comments below!

T-Mobile: overages on 200MB data plan in, throttling out

Bad news T-Mobile fans: AllThingsD just confirmed that throttling on the 200MB plan is going the way of the dodo, with the carrier opting to charge overage fees instead. Under the new entry-level plan, those exceeding their monthly allotment will face a $0.10 overage per megabyte, until their penalties reach $30 -- the capped surcharge. The switchover won't happen until midnight tomorrow (the 13th), so those of you seeking to get grandfathered into the throttled plan better hop to it. Or you could just splurge on a pricier data plan, just like Little Magenta would want you to...

The Age of the $600 TiVo Is Nearly Upon Us [TiVo]

When they write TiVo's obituary, the last paragraph will be devoted to the Premiere Elite, a DVR that may cost more than your average 32-inch TV. But it recorded four channels at once, they'll cry. And we'll all solemnly nod our heads, and shrug, and immediately forget. More »

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Demi Lovato Reveals Album Title, Unbroken

LP will be released September 20.

Come September 20, Demi Lovato is declaring she's Unbroken. The singer took to Twitter and Facebook to formally announce that as her forthcoming album title.

On Thursday, Lovato teased her followers with a string of tweets that read, "Do you guys want to know my album title....??!!!? Are you ready because I'm about to announce it.......... In.......," she wrote. She then launched into a tweeted countdown before revealing, "#UNBROKEN !!!!!!!!!!!!" and tweeting a glammed-up photo of herself in a long black skirt and fur jacket, wearing red lipstick. She then started the hashtag "#Unbroken920."

She made a similar announcement on Facebook, adding, "I'm happy to announce the title of my new album: Unbroken!" The title is a reference to her personal strife over the last year. Lovato was released from treatment back in January after seeking help for cutting, eating disorders and bipolar disorder.

She launched her comeback single, the equally empowering "Skyscraper," earlier this summer. The track, she says, hit her on an incredibly emotional level. "I doubled over," she told Elle of recording the emotional song. "Tears streaming down my face. It was a sight to see."

She's been spotted in the studio working on tracks with Missy Elliot, Timbaland and production team Rock Mafia (who have also worked with Miley Cyrus). She's set to perform at the VH1 Do Something Awards later this month for her first public performance since opening up about her personal issues.

With so much anticipation for her latest venture, she is now looking to the future. "I'm not going to be perfect, but ... if I can make it through the day, that's all that matters," Lovato said. "It's a daily journey, and it's definitely going to be a struggle that I'll have to deal with for the rest of my life."

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.

To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.

According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.

Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).

The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.

It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.

Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.
