Personal subtitle glasses from Sony may get trial run in UK next year

Subtitle Glasses
It's been quite a while since we've heard any news about those spiffy specs that put private subtitles in your field of view. It looks like they're finally inching closer to reality though, with some help from Sony's UK arm. The BBC recently took hard-of-hearing Brit Charlie Swinbourne to the theater and let him give the glasses a go. Rather than displaying subtitles on screen the eye-wear projects text on the lenses where only that particular user can see them. Going to see a French film in an American cinema, but your first language is Spanish? One day you could pick your language, in addition to keeping the captions out of other movie goers way. Sony hopes to trial the glasses in UK theaters next year. Check out the source link for the full report.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!

Kim Kardashian People Cover: First Wedding Photos!!

The People cover featuring Kim Kardashian on her wedding day has finally been released! The Cover and first pics are out and Kim was absolutely stunning! Kim Kardashin married Kris Humphries this past weekend in a rumored $10 million lavish ceremony. “It was like we were in heaven,” Kardashian tells this week’s PEOPLE in a cover story with an exclusive wedding photo album. Adds Humphries: “I’m going to remember how perfect it was.” The wedding was black and white themed, and Kim’s wedding planner explained to People what they were going for with the formal wedding, “Kim loves black and white and so does Kris. They have this Hollywood royalty feeling and the black and white represented formality. But tradition was very important to them.” Kim wore a custom Vera Wang gown, and later had two other wedding dress changes. Her hair was pinned back, which was surprising. I expected her hair to be down and flowing! She looked stunning. Her look was complete with a veil, beaded head band, and later, a beautiful barrette on the side of her hair. Her bridesmaids were her sisters of course, who also wore all white and looked equally as stunning. This is [...]

Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

During "MTV First: Lady Gaga" on Thursday night (August 18), the Mother Monster, joined by a sea of her fans in Times Square, announced that she has the coveted spot of opening the 2011 Video Music Awards.

The Little Monsters, right in the center of the hustle and bustle of Times Square, unfurled a banner that read, "GAGA TO OPEN VMAs!!!," revealing that Lady Gaga would have the distinction of kicking off the big show Sunday, August 28, when it all goes down live at 9 p.m. at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

"I have a really big announcement," the New York native told Sway, the same night her "Yoü and I" video made its television debut. "But I thought as usual, instead of me announcing it, I'd let the Little Monsters do it for me."

Gaga Gives the Real Story Behind the "Yoü and I" video.

Gaga is nominated for four VMAs, including Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for "Born This Way," as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for "Judas."

"It means the world to me," Gaga said of opening the 2011 VMAs. "I just feel really blessed every day. I have the most amazing fans."

Lady Gaga first made VMA history back in 2009, when she appeared on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall with Kermit the Frog as her date. That year, when she wasn't bleeding onstage during her "Paparazzi" performance, she was winning Moonmen for Best New Artist, Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects.

At the 2010 VMAs, Gaga didn't perform, but she did reveal her Born This Way album title and a few lines from the title track, taking the stage in a headline-making meat dress. She also arrived at the show in a voluminous Alexander McQueen ball gown while protesting the now-defunct "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Gaga took home eight Moonmen that night, including Video of the Year for "Bad Romance."

In 2011, Gaga will certainly have fans talking again as she sets the tone for the entire show.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.
