Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

At the 2011 Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga's alter ego Jo Calderone presented Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by telling the audience that Spears "taught us all how to be fearless." And that fearlessness was honored with a dance-heavy tribute to the pop star. Brit's ever-growing legacy is the reason why she was so deserving of the special award, her celebrity fans and members of her inner circle told MTV News.

"She never lets you down," her longtime choreographer Brian Friedman told MTV News on the VMA black carpet on Sunday night. "She's definitely not dull. There's always something crazy coming around the next turn. I think it's a mix between music, which is always incredible, the dance performance you see on the stage, the iconic videos, the fashion, and then the fact that she can't be knocked down."

We spotted Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and more hanging out backstage!

Those sentiments were mirrored by her pal and former 'NSYNC member JC Chasez, who noted that even at 30, "She's actually been around long enough [to have a tribute]. She has a body of work to pull from."

Spears' former tourmate, DJ Pauly D, also gushed about the singer, who won Best Pop Video for "Till The World Ends."

"Oh, man! She deserves it out of anybody," the "Jersey Shore" star said. "She's been killing it forever now. She's got so many albums, and every time she brings out an album, she brings it."

After Gaga presented Spears with the award on Sunday, a group of young female dancers of various ages, dressed up in Britney-themed costumes from her hit music videos, took the stage to perform some of her most memorable moves.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

'Footloose' Stars 'Cut Loose' At Hollywood Premiere

At Monday night's Hollywood premiere of the buzz-worthy "Footloose" remake, MTV News had to ask the stars about the film's catchy and intriguing tagline: "Cut Loose."

Naturally, we also talked about how the new "Footloose" compares to the old, along with how many nods there are to the 1984 Kevin Bacon career-launching classic, which will be rolled out in the next few days leading up to the film's release. But, first and foremost, we wanted to know what the actors do to cut loose during their downtime.

Check out photos of the stars at the red carpet premiere

"I cut loose by playing with my dogs," said Julianne Hough, who plays rebellious preacher's daughter Ariel Moore. "They give me make-out sessions every morning in bed, and I love that; that's the best."

Kenny Wormald, who plays newcomer Ren McCormack, joked, "Aside from when I dance and break things in a warehouse?" — alluding to the film's iconic "angry dance" sequences. "I like to play golf. It kind of zens me out a little bit," he revealed. "There's a lot of cement in L.A., so I get off to a golf course, a beautiful green area, I love it."

Miles Teller, whose learning-to-dance montage set to "Let's Hear it for the Boy" is one of the film's best, admitted: "I'm not afraid to say it: I dance by myself in my room sometimes, and I have a disco ball that's in my bedroom that I plug in."

Of her passion for horseback riding, Andie MacDowell (who plays Ariel's mother Vi) said, "I ride bareback. I've been riding like that since I was 11, 10, so I have some experience."

Check out everything we've got on "Footloose."

Samsung teases next week's 'Unpacked,' offers a momentary glance at a mysterious device

See that image above? It's Samsung's way of being sly. The company put out a teaser video for its "Google Episode" of Unpacked occurring on October 11th (we'll be there live, by the way), stating that "something BIG is coming." And if you're not looking close enough, you may completely miss the brief glimpse Sammy gave us of a device with a curved screen. The vid doesn't go so far as to loudly exclaim that this mystery device is the Nexus Prime, of course, but c'mon -- we're picking up what's getting put down. Check out the video below to do some sleuthing of your own.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Need more Britney Spears amped-up club tracks in your life? Well, the Femme Fatale singer has your back. Britney tweeted her plan to release a remix album next month.

B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2 will drop on October 11, and the singer had this to say about the release: "Exciting news people ... new remix album is coming out on 10/11! Pumped for you to hear these tracks - I love them."

The album will feature reworked versions of 10 of her songs, both from Femme Fatale and her previous work. The songs are: "Gimme More" (Kaskade Club Mix), "Piece of Me" (Tiësto Club Mix), "Radar" (Tonal Club Remix), "Womanizer" (Benny Benassi Extended), "Circus" (Linus Loves Remix), "If U Seek Amy" (U-Tern Remix), "3" (Manhattan Clique Club Remix), "Till the World Ends" (Alex Suarez Club Remix), "I Wanna Go" (Gareth Emery Remix) and "Criminal" (Varsity Team Remix).

Spears dropped the first part of the B in the Mix series back in November 2005. On that record, folks like Justice, Bill Hamel, Junkie XL and Jason Nevins, to name a few, put their spin on major releases and under-the-radar tracks including "Me Against the Music," "Touch of My Hand," "And Then We Kiss" and "Early Mornin'."

The news comes as Britney preps the release of her next single, the Femme Fatale slow jam "Criminal," which made the track listing for B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2. Spears also recently tweeted that she's shooting the video for "Criminal" in England.

Sarah Palin: Winning Like Charlie Sheen?

Sarah Palin: Winning Like Charlie Sheen?

In politics, as in Hollywood, “winning” is in the eye of the beholder.

Most pundits and politicos say there’s no way that Sarah Palin is going to run for president in 2012 because time has run out. She’s dragged her feet and teased us with her coy ‘I’m thinking and I haven’t ruled it out’ comments. But that analysis relies on old school political reasoning that no one would run for President of the United States unless they actually wanted to be President of the United States.

It’s no secret that Palin doesn’t play politics the old-fashioned way. She’s made it very clear that campaigning for her is just as much a function of keeping any spotlight on her, as it is about speeches, policy papers and kissing babies. And that’s why I still believe that Palin is going to jump in the race soon and mix it up with the other candidates for a couple of months. I know she’s still a FOX News commentator and that supposedly means she’s sworn to FOX News that she’s not in the race (they cut Newt Gingrich and others loose when they said they wanted to run), but Palin is a different case. She’s real star power for them. I have a feeling Roger Ailes would have no problem bending his own rules for her.

Want proof? Here are five reasons I think Palin will still get in the race:

1. Deadlines? She don’t need no stinking deadlines! I bet all the paperwork is ready and someone on the Palin payroll is on call to file the necessary forms in the primary states she’s interested in. Don’t worry -- they’ll make it in just under the wire.

2. It’s too late? Getting into the race at this point in 2011 is only late if your goal is actually to become President of the United States.

3. Media lost interest? When have the media ever lost interest in Palin if she wants the attention. Two words -- Bus. Tour.

4. Field too crowded? Republicans are still praying for the likes of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie or Jeb Bush to announce a presidential bid. Mike Huckabee anyone? If it’s not too crowded for them, there's definitely room for Palin.

5. Mama grizzlies still love her. Don’t count them out. Palin was the long cool drink of water in the desert for Republican women in the 2008 election. They loved her then and they’ll love her now. And they’ll still love her when she drops out of the race for “family reasons.”

For Palin to “win,” she just needs to be a presidential candidate long enough to look legitimate, so she can increase her speaking fees and then play something of a kingmaker for the actual election. And then maybe another TV show? If we’re done with seeing her in Alaska, maybe Julia Louis-Dreyfuss will even make room for Palin in her pretend vice presidential digs.
