Who needs email when you have text messaging, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and a menagerie of alternative communication tools? Not Atos, a French IT firm that's planning to give email the boot. Over the course of the next eighteen months, CEO Thierry Breton hopes to ween 80,000 employees off of the old standby, pushing text messages, phone calls and face-to-face chats as alternatives. Breton strives to promote a collaborative social network similar to Facebook or Twitter to fill email's void and suffice as an easily accessible global network. Having himself been email sober at work for three years, Breton claims email is inefficient, and a burden to the workflow. Will this new social environment promote efficiency, or will pet photos and status updates become the new spam? If employees can't keep their social inclinations under wraps, Atos may have to resort to the Medieval carrier pigeon. Delivery estimates for long distance range from five days to never.

It's the beginning of the month, so that means that the new numbers for just how many phones are running each version of Android have come out. Following the past trends, Gingerbread has seen even more growth, running over 50 percent of all Android devices that visit the Android Market. The legacy versions keep dropping as well, with Cupcake and Donut (Android 1.5 and 1.6 respectively) dropping to 2.1 percent of the total. We still don't see a very big uptick in Honeycomb, which has historically been a slower grower. With Ice Cream Sandwich now among us, this chart will be interesting to watch as we see which carriers and OEM's send out those timely updates.

Movie hits half-billion mark in less than two weeks.
By Gil Kaufman
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" looks to dominate the box office for a good long time. After two weeks atop the list of top-grossing movies, the penultimate film in the vampires and werewolves epic has already raked in more than $508 million worldwide.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is the ninth film this year to push past the half-billion mark globally, hitting the mark in just 12 days of release. So far, the movie has grossed $223.4 million in North America and $285 million internationally, for a grand total of $508.4 million.
"We couldn't be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years," said Summit Entertainment co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement. "Thank you to all involved with the films from the actors, filmmakers and Stephenie Meyer to the most important group of all, the global fan base that continues to drive a desire for more Edward, Jacob and Bella."
MTV News asked experts how long this domination can go on, especially since the only competition this weekend is the NC-17-rated full-frontal indie flick "Shame."
"It'll be close between ['Breaking Dawn - Part 1'] and 'The Muppets,' because ['The Muppets'] has much better word of mouth," said Boxoffice.com's Phil Contrino, noting that it was too soon to say which would come out on top. He also predicted that the movie should finish its domestic run in the $300 million range and stay near the top until such holiday blockbusters as "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and "Mission Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" on December 21.
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on November 16, 2012.

Singer says her collaboration with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj made a 'supergroup of three hot, strong women.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias
Earlier this week, Britney Spears, Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj dropped their femme-fatale-friendly remix of the Spears club track "Till the World Ends." The already fun song got super-charged thanks to Minaj's cutting verses and Ke$ha's recognizable vocals.
"I'm a massive fan of both the ladies I share the track with," K told MTV News on Wednesday at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards. "I wrote 'TTWE' for Britney with [producers] Dr. Luke and Max [Martin] and she killed it and I loved it, but I just thought a supergroup of three hot, strong women could just take over the airwaves."
Ke$ha went on to give props to both the ladies. "I'm such a massive fan of Britney and I'm such a massive supporter of Nicki and a fan, and chicks sometimes don't team up. I don't know why, but I'm, like, huge on the girl power, so I just wanted to make a power girl track take over."
The remix quickly won praise from fans who seem to think the new features step up the song's game. "You know, with the three of us, I wasn't necessarily surprised [people like it] because I'm such a massive fan of Nicki Minaj and obviously with Britney I'm a fan of it, [taking] myself out of the equation," she said. "I'm just happy people like it."
So did Ke$ha (who once sang backup for Spears) feel any pressure writing a song for Britney? "There was no pressure. Writing for somebody else is really fun 'cause I consider myself a songwriter first and foremost," she explained. "So it was so much fun to put my brain in the sexy Britney Spears brain and express myself almost as if I were possessed by her."

'Young Adult' star jokes to MTV News that she's been 'unemployed,' getting 'therapy,' during big-screen absence.

For a woman who's been honored with nearly every important award that Hollywood has to offer, from an Academy Award to a Golden Globe, not to mention coveted titles like Esquire's "Sexiest Woman Alive" and Spike's "Decade of Hotness," it seems like it's been awhile since we've seen Charlize Theron in action.
Thankfully the nearly three-year wait for a Theron movie to hit theaters is almost over. Her latest flick is the buzzed-about Jason Reitman-directed, Diablo Cody-scripted comedy "Young Adult," which gets a limited release next week; the highly anticipated "Snow White and the Huntsman" hits theaters next summer.
MTV News recently caught up with the down-to-earth Oscar winner as she did press for "Young Adult," and we had to find out what the lovely leading lady has been up to the last few years.
"[I was] unemployed, I just couldn't get a job," Theron joked, adding that an average weekday for her involved several ... suspicious activities.
"I cry and drink and shoot heroin. Is that not a typical Tuesday for you?" Theron asked MTV News' Josh Horowitz with a smile. "Then I go to therapy and things turn out OK. No, I was getting ready to go and do a film in Australia and that just kept pushing and pushing," she explained, referring to the problem-plagued "Mad Max: Fury Road."
Theron said she "would love" to make "Fury Road" in spite of the delayed production. And while she's slated to star opposite Tom Hardy in the film, the actress debunked a rumor that her character would be kicking butt with just one arm. "Who told you that?" she asked when we brought up the report. "Do you actually believe everything on the Interweb? Poor you," she laughed.
It's still unclear when or if George Miller's long-delayed resurrection of the "Mad Max" franchise will start production again, but fans can be hopeful. After all, Miller recently revealed his plans for not one, but three feature films.
"We started with ['Fury Road'], but we then started to do a second story and a third," he said. "We've written the script for the second and almost finished the third. We never intended to — they were part of the exploration of the characters."
